It is intended to be worn by anyone in the exposed cockpit or working deck of a floating boat. Does not apply to boat 'trapezoidal' seat belts, windsurfing belts, seat belts for fast motorboats and harnesses for fall protection.
This International standard has been prepared to meet the needs of people swimming in pleasure boats. Deck harnesses and harnesses manufactured to this International standard will provide reasonable assurance that the user will remain attached to the ship.
The deck harness and safety rope do not protect against falls from height. This International standard does not cover the requirements for a dinghy "trapeze" harness, a windsurf harness or a seat harness for fast motor boats.
This International standard is intended to serve as a guide to manufacturers, purchasers and users of such safety equipment, ensuring that the equipment provides an effective standard of performance in use.
It is equally important that the designer encourages the wearing of the equipment by making it comfortable and attractive for continued use while at sea, rather than being stored in a closet for emergency use. The main reason for the existence of this International standard is the recognition that comfort and mobility are important factors in determining whether deck harnesses are worn.
