EN ISO 12460-4 specifies a desiccator method for determining the amount of formaldehyde emitted from particle board, fibreboard, plywood, oriented particle board (OSB) and wood laminate flooring.
Formaldehyde emission is determined by placing test pieces of known surface area in a desiccator at a controlled temperature and measuring the amount of released formaldehyde absorbed in a given volume of water over 24 hours.
Unless otherwise specified, use only recognized analytical grade reagents and distilled or demineralized water or water of equivalent purity.
Place test pieces free of loose particles in the wire sample holder before placing them in the desiccator. Place the sample holder containing the test pieces inside the desiccator in the center of the wire mesh support directly above the glass dish.
The determination is based on the Hantzsch reaction, where formaldehyde reacts with ammonium ions and acetylacetone to give diacetyldihydrotoluidine (DDL). DDL has a maximum absorption at 412 nm. The reaction is specific to formaldehyde.
The calibration curve is produced from a standard formaldehyde solution, the concentration of which is determined by iodometric titration. Check the calibration curve at least once a month. If the monthly calibration shows less than 2% variation in the mean values, the calibration curve control interval can be increased. Records should be kept to justify any increased control intervals.
