EN ISO 12460-5 specifies a removal method known as the piercing method. It is used to determine the formaldehyde content of unlaminated and uncoated wood-based panels.
Formaldehyde emission from wood-based panels (eg particleboard, plywood, fibreboard, OSB) is a complex process. The test result for a particular board depends on the age at the time of testing, aging conditions, moisture content, etc. it depends.
Formaldehyde is extracted from the test pieces by boiling toluene and then transferred to distilled or demineralized water. The formaldehyde content of this aqueous solution is determined photometrically by the acetylacetone method.
If this method is used for production control, the panel selected for sampling is cut immediately after cooling. Test pieces from the plate will be stored hermetically sealed at room temperature.
The determination is based on the Hantzsch reaction where aqueous formaldehyde reacts with ammonium ions and acetylacetone to form diacetyldihydrolutidine (DDL). DDL has a maximum absorbance at 412 nm. The reaction is highly specific to formaldehyde.
Extraction is carried out for (120 ± 5) minutes from the moment the first bubbles pass through the filter element. Heating should be such that foaming begins between 20 minutes and 30 minutes after the heater is switched on.
