The drum friction test involves subjecting a conveyor belt sample to friction produced by a rotating drum. The sample is exposed to heat and its behavior during testing is observed. The test evaluates the tape's ability to resist ignition and spread of flames, as well as its self-extinguishing capacity when the external heat source is removed.
The purpose of this standard is to provide a test method to assist conveyor belt users in assessing the degree of risk that can be expected from the hazard posed when a conveyor belt stops and the drive mechanism of the conveyor system continues to operate. It causes local heating of the conveyor belt through contact with the drive drum or other frictional heat source.
A properly assembled and tensioned conveyor belt test piece is wound halfway around a rotating steel drum to simulate a stopped belt. The test is continued at specified tensions for a specified period of time or until the belt ruptures or breaks. The presence or absence of flame or glow is noted and reported, and the maximum temperature of the drum is recorded. The test is done in still air or moving air. Two options are given in the contact publication. The reduced contact arc test (135° contact) with increased initial load is considered equivalent to the 180° contact test.
