EN ISO 28706-3 Standard Test for Determination of Resistance to Glassy and Porcelain Enamels, Chemical Corrosion

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 28706-3 testing. EN ISO 28706-3 describes a test method for determining the resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamelware to attack by alkaline liquids at temperatures between 25 °C and 95 °C.

EN ISO 28706-3 Standard Test for Determination of Resistance to Glassy and Porcelain Enamels, Chemical Corrosion

The apparatus used is a hexagonal container with a rectangular glass flask in which six enamel samples or four enamel samples are tested simultaneously. Resistance to any alkaline liquid can be determined. However, the test method was originally used to determine the resistance to hot detergent solutions in the neutral to alkaline range used for washing textiles.

Since detergents are subject to constant changes in their composition, a standard test solution is specified which can be considered a typical composition for commercially available detergents in terms of alkalinity, wetting properties and complexing behavior.

The pH and alkalinity of the standard test solution depend on the ratios of sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate and sodium perborate present; sodium tripolyphosphate acts simultaneously as a complexing agent. The wetting properties of the standard test solution are achieved by the addition of alkylsulfonate. A higher sodium perborate content is not considered necessary, as the effect of oxygen on enamel is negligible and an increase in perborate content does not cause a significant change in the alkalinity of the standard test solution.

Testing different enamels using this standard test solution and other test solutions (including 5% sodium pyrophosphate solution) justified the use of this standard test solution to determine the resistance of enamels to hot detergent solutions.
