EN ISO 4484-2 Microplastics Obtained from Textile Sources - Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation of Microplastics

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN ISO 4484-2 testing. The method describes how to identify MPs in the field of textile processing and applications and allows their classification according to particle size and shape, as well as polymer type.

EN ISO 4484-2 Microplastics Obtained from Textile Sources - Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation of Microplastics

The method enables qualitative-quantitative analytical determination of microplastics; here the following can be defined:

  • Number;
  • Morphology (morphological features);
  • Size distribution;
  • The nature, chemical origin or properties and colors of the polymers, if any.

The method can also be used to provide results on estimated surface area and mass of microplastics per sample unit.

The results of the quantification of microplastics can be clearly expressed using the method with a unit of measurement that does not depend on the source of the sample examined (raw material, production process, environmental sample (wastewater, e.g. laundry, air, industrial)).

The process allows the collection of information such as size, shape, surface area and (estimated) mass, allowing the information to be transferred to experts for ecotoxicological assessment.

Depending on the matrix, it may be necessary to pre-treat the sample to achieve the required concentration of microplastics and to remove inorganic and organic (e.g. biological origin) contaminants that may hinder identification. The procedure consists of preliminary examination of the sample by light microscopy followed by identification of microplastics using molecular spectroscopy.

The origins of microplastics are diverse. So is its shape and size. Its typical (but not only) morphology when extracted from textiles is fibrous, and its diameter and length may vary depending on the structural parameters of the yarns and fabrics or washing conditions.
