EN ISO 4623-2 describes a test procedure for evaluating the protective effect of paint or varnish coatings on aluminum against filamentous corrosion caused by a cut line mark across the coating.
It is only suitable for evaluating the performance of the tested coating/substrate combination. It is not suitable for predicting the performance of the coating on different surfaces.
A line cut through a coating of paint or varnish on metal can lead to various types of corrosion, including blistering of the coating, corrosion of the metal under the coating, and filamentous corrosion. Filamentous corrosion tends to develop under certain conditions of temperature and relative humidity and when traces of acid, base or salt are present under the paint coating or in cracks in the coating. These conditions are often found in marine or industrial environments. A certain amount of low corrosion will always occur in the coating starting from the scratch mark. However, thread-shaped corrosion is considered to be present only when the typical thread-shaped pattern is evident.
A small amount of hydrochloric acid is added to the line mark by exposing it to hydrochloric acid vapor. The panel is then exposed in a test cabinet at 40°C and 82% relative humidity. The effects of exposure are then assessed against criteria previously agreed between the parties involved; these criteria are usually either subjective or as provided in ISO 4628-10.
