EN ISO 6571 Spices, Condiments and Herbs - Test for Essential Oil Content

The essential oil content is expressed in milliliters per 100 g of dry product.

An aqueous suspension of the product is distilled. The distillate is collected in a graduated tube containing a measured volume of xylene to fix the essential oil. The organic and aqueous phases are then allowed to separate and the total volume of the organic phase is read. The essential oil content is calculated after subtracting the xylene volume.
