EN ISO 8243 Cigarettes - Standard Test for Sampling

EN ISO 8243 specifies two methods of providing representative samples of a population of cigarettes manufactured for sale. Different procedures are determined according to whether sampling is done at the point of sale or at the factory.

• Sampling at one point in time enables the evaluation of selected characteristics of cigarettes on that occasion. Sampling is carried out as soon as possible.
• Sampling over a period of time provides ongoing evaluations. For practical purposes, it can be thought of as a series of samples, each taken at a given time.

EN ISO 8243 provides information on the statistical basis for data processing and gives practical experience-based estimates of typical confidence intervals for NFDPM, nicotine and CO yields that can be found when a product is sampled in accordance with this International Regulation.

It is difficult to recommend a detailed cigarette sampling method suitable for all purposes. The purpose of sampling is obviously to provide a representative sample, but the problem arises because the specific purpose for which the tests are required influences the recommendation.

Sampling is performed at a "point in time" (for example, cigarettes available for distribution from a factory/warehouse on a scheduled day or available from a retail outlet on the market). When a sample is needed that is representative of cigarettes that have been available for a significant period of time (for example, cigarettes that represent several months of production), a series of sub-period samples will be taken in a series of sampling and the results will be combined.
