EN ISO 9073-3 Nonwovens - Part 3: Test Methods for Determining Tensile Strength and Elongation at Break Using the Strip Method

It allows applying a longitudinal force at a constant rate of elongation to a test piece of a given length and width and determining the breaking strength and elongation values ​​from the recorded force-elongation curve. To meet the specific needs of nonwovens, alternative requirements to those listed in ISO 9073 are specified in this part of EN ISO 5081.

• A fixed extension rate (100 mm/min).

A test specimen is clamped in a tensile testing machine and a force is applied to the specimen until it breaks. The breaking force and elongation values ​​of the test specimen are obtained from machine scales, dials, autographic record tables or a computer interface.

The strip test method is considered satisfactory for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of most nonwovens. This procedure is applicable for testing nonwoven materials in dry conditioned or wet condition.

Comparing results from tensile testing machines operating on different principles is not recommended. When using different types of machines for benchmark testing, the fixed cut-off time of (20 ± 3) seconds is the established way of generating data. Even then, the data can differ significantly. A constant elongation tensile testing machine is preferred for this method.
