This standard specifies a method, performed under standard conditions, for evaluating pot life by preparing and storing a sample of a multicomponent coating system and then measuring a specific property(s).
Pot life is critical to ensuring that coatings can be applied effectively without hardening or becoming unusable before application is complete.
Reactive systems that cure in a short period of time (e.g. 3 hours) will have pot lives so close to the gel point that they will need to be tested for that property in accordance with ISO 2535.
It is done as a pass/fail test by determining certain properties after a certain period of time, or as determining the pot life by repeating the determinations at appropriate time intervals.
This standard is not intended for on-site control of products during their application. The aim is to determine the "pot life" in the laboratory.
The value obtained from this test method may be subject to modification by suppliers for practical reasons (e.g. initial temperature) when making recommendations to users, in which case it should be referred to as "practical pot life".
