An octave, one-third octave, or band-limited weighted sound power level is calculated from the measured value. The method can be applied to any source where a physically inert measuring surface can be identified and where the noise produced by the source is stable over time, in situ or special-purpose test environments.

The sound power emitted by a source is equal to the value of the scalar product of the sound intensity vector and the integral of the corresponding fundamental field vector on any surface completely surrounding the source.

Previous International standards, mainly IS0 3740 to IS0 3747, defining methods for determining sound power levels of noise sources, without exception, specify the sound pressure level as the primary acoustic quantity to be measured.
