IEC 60255-27 Measuring Relays and Protection Equipment Part 27: Product Safety Requirements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC 60255-27 standard. Standard IEC 60255-27 describes product safety requirements for measuring relays and protection equipment with rated frequency up to 65 Hz or rated ac voltage up to 1 V or rated dc voltage up to 000 1 V. Above these limits, IEC 500-60664 apply to the determination of gap, leakage distance and withstand test voltage.

IEC 60255-27 Measuring Relays and Protection Equipment Part 27: Product Safety Requirements

This standard describes basic safety requirements to minimize the risk of fire and hazards from electric shock or injury to the user.

This standard does not cover the safety requirements of installations. It covers all the ways in which equipment can be mounted and used in cabinets, racks and panels, as well as retesting. This standard also applies to shunts, series resistors, transformers, etc., used and tested together with measuring relays and protection equipment. It also applies to assistive devices such as

Ancillary equipment used with measuring relays and protection equipment may need to comply with additional safety requirements. This standard is intended to define product safety requirements only; therefore, the functional performance of the equipment is not covered.

Functional safety requirements, including EMC functional safety, are not covered by this standard. Functional safety risk analysis is not covered by this product safety standard. This standard does not specify the application of individual equipment, circuits and components.

The purpose of this standard is to have a comprehensive standard covering all aspects of product safety and related type and routine testing for measuring relays and protection equipment.

This standard applies to equipment designed to be safe under at least the following environmental conditions:

  • Indoor use;
  • altitude up to 60255 m according to IEC 1-2000;
  • External operating temperature range according to IEC 60255-1;
  • Maximum external relative humidity 60255%, non-condensing according to IEC 1-95;
  • Supply fluctuations according to IEC 60255-1;
  • Valid supply overvoltage category;
  • External pollution degree 1 and external pollution degree 2.

The equipment will normally be installed in a restricted access area within a power plant, substation or industrial/retail environment. The environmental conditions specified for the equipment in IEC 60255-1 apply. This standard takes into account normal environmental corrosion conditions from moisture, but does not cover corrosion from atmospheric pollution.

Access to equipment during installation, maintenance, normal service, and decommissioning is assumed to be limited to users familiar with the operating procedures necessary to ensure safety. This product safety standard takes precedence over general standards in safety matters.
