This International Standard specifies various methods for preparing fiber samples in the laboratory and offers a limited treatment of the problem of sampling for testing.
The application area of each method is given at the beginning of the article regarding the method. It is not possible for the coverage of each procedure to be completely comprehensive; In most cases, the selection of test specimens or test specimens must necessarily fall within the scope of the appropriate test method.
The selection of samples based on length is not within the scope of this International Standard, nor are the special requirements for the determination of commercial weights.
No single sampling technique can be designed that will work in all situations. For example, sampling a cotton bale presents problems quite different from those encountered in sampling a consignment package of yarn, while sampling a card net is different from both.
If the fibers in the pile are well mixed so that there is no variation in composition from one piece to another, that is, if the individual fibers are randomly distributed, the sample can be taken from any part of the pile without disadvantage. If the fibers in the pile are not known to be well mixed, and the composition may vary from one section to another, a sample taken from any one location will not be representative of the entire pile.
A number of methods for assessing fiber quality are therefore presented, illustrating techniques that have been found acceptable in meeting the more common types of problems encountered in sampling. Methods specific to the requirements of the research and specific techniques that must be used, such as sampling wool from fleece or cotton from seed, are not included.
