ISO 11357-4 Plastics - Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) - Part 4: Standard Test for Determination of Specific Heat Capacity

Each measurement consists of three runs at the same scan rate:

• An empty run (empty crucibles in the example and a reference to the elders);
• A calibration run (calibration material in the sample holder crucible and empty crucible in the reference holder);
• A sample run (sample in sample holder crucible and empty crucible in reference holder).

In the step-by-step scanning method, the total temperature range to be scanned is divided into small ranges and a full determination is made for each temperature range consisting of three specified runs. By integrating the heat flow rate curve, the total heat consumed in the range ΔQ can be obtained.

Prepare three crucibles and their lids and weigh the crucibles with their lids. The total mass should not differ by more than 0,1 mg. In other respects such as material, size, crucible type (open or closed), the crucibles will be the same.

When the specific heat capacities of the samples are not significantly dependent on temperature, a stepwise scanning method can be used where the integration of the heat flow over small temperature ranges yields a set of individual specific heat values ​​for the temperature ranges considered.
