ISO 12219-4 Interior Air of Road Vehicles - Test for Determination of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds from Vehicle Interior Parts and Materials - Small Room Method

ISO 12219-4 specifies a qualitative and quantitative analytical method for vapor-phase organic compounds (volatile and some semi-volatile) released from automobile trim materials under simulated real-use conditions using small emission test chambers (small chamber).

The small rooms are intended to provide a transfer function to vehicle level emissions. This method is designed for the evaluation of new car interior trim components, but is in principle applicable to used car components.

Target compounds include VOCs (conventionally defined as organic compounds in the n-hexane to n-hexadecane volatility range) and volatile carbonyl compounds such as formaldehyde. The analytical procedure specified for VOCs is ISO 16000‑6 and for formaldehyde and some other light carbonyl compounds it is ISO 16000‑3.

ISO 12219-4 supplements ASTM D5116 and VDA 276 and provides an approach to third-party testing labs and manufacturing industry to:

• Determining the effect of actual usage conditions on specific VOC emission data;
• Comparison of emissions from various installations in relation to specific VOC emissions;
• Evaluation and classification of specific assemblies in relation to specific VOC emission data;
• Providing specific VOC emission data to develop and verify a correlation between the material level methods and the vehicle level method;
• Evaluation of prototype, "low emission" assemblies during development.
