International Standards ISO 9283 and ISO 9946 were published in 1990 and 1991 to meet the needs of industries. To complement these standards, some modifications for real applications are being explored.

With regard to ISO 9283, it is important to clarify the type and performance level of existing measuring systems applicable to robots and to create additional standards or reports.

This standard includes an attempt to classify measurement techniques and methods applicable to robot characteristic testing and describes the operating principles and accuracy of current state-of-the-art and, as far as possible, current measurement systems.

This method is based on using three laser beams generated from three laser interferometers with two-axis servo-controlled tracking aimed at a common target located on the robot's wrist.

The pose characteristic of the robot in three-dimensional space can be determined based on the distance data obtained from the three interferometers. Orientation can be measured from tan if six interferometers are used in a setup where six beams aim at three independent targets on the robot.
