ISO 15106-2 specifies an instrumental method for determining the water vapor transmission rate of plastic film, plastic sheeting, and multilayer structures, including plastics, using an infrared sensing sensor.
The dry room at a given relative humidity is separated by a layer of the material to be tested from the wet room, where the atmosphere is saturated with water vapor at a known temperature. The humidity change caused by the water vapor passing through the sample is detected by an infrared sensor that can provide an electrical output signal, which is a measure of the relative humidity in the dry room. The time taken to reach steady state is measured and converted into water vapor transmission rate.
The samples should be representative of the material, wrinkle-free, free of pinholes, and of uniform thickness. Each sample shall have a larger area than the conduction area of the cell used for testing and shall be hermetically mounted.
The precision of this test method is unknown as interlaboratory data are not available. A statement of precision will be included in the next revision as interlaboratory data become available.
