ISO 1518-2 Paints and Varnishes, Determination of Scratch Resistance, Part 2: Standard Test for Variable Loading Method

This standard specifies a method for determining the scratch resistance of a single coating of a paint, varnish or related product, or the top layer of a multi-coat system, using a pointed stylus that is loaded with an ever-increasing load.

This test has been found to be useful in comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings. It is most useful in providing relative ratings for a range of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in scratch resistance.

Neither this standard nor ISO 1518-1 specifies a method specified in ISO 12137 using a curved stylus. The choice between the three methods will depend on the particular practical problem.

The tested product or system is applied in equal thickness to flat panels with a homogeneous surface texture. After drying/curing, the scratch resistance is determined using an automated tool that pushes the panels under a mounted pointed pen, thereby pressing it perpendicular to the surface of the test panel. The load on the test panel is increased continuously until the coating is scratched.
