ISO 18573 specifies the temperature, humidity and time conditions used for conditioning and testing all types of conveyor belts, regardless of whether they are plastic or rubber coated.
It also includes requirements regarding the time interval that must be observed between production and testing of conveyor belt test pieces. Special conditions applicable to a particular test or material or simulating a particular climatic environment are not included.
Conditioning test pieces prior to testing is considered a fundamental practice in most, if not all, testing methods. Its purpose is to provide common ground for testing initiation and to eliminate an unnecessary variable in the search for optimum sensitivity for a particular test.
Conveyor belts, other than steel cord conveyor belts, contain a textile element. This can be highly hydrophobic or slightly more hydrophilic. Similarly, the polymer layer or coating may be thermoplastic or subject to thermal aging. Each of these factors can have a significant impact on the characteristics of the conveyor belt. These factors need to be taken into account when deciding whether conditioning is necessary and, if so, what the most appropriate conditions would be.
During the conditioning period, test pieces should be positioned so that the entire surface of the test piece is exposed as much as possible without applying any stress/strain on the test piece, unless otherwise specified in the method. Following testing, the test pieces will be conditioned in an environment free of light or ionizing radiation.
