The method presented in this standard is an indication of how passive fire protection materials perform in a jet fire that may occur, for example, in petrochemical plants. It aims to simulate the thermal and mechanical loads applied to passive fire protection material by large-scale jet fires from high-pressure combustible gas, pressurized liquefied gas or glowing liquid fuels.

Key items required for the test are the jet release nozzle, the flame recirculation chamber and a shield chamber. All of these items are required for the internal configurations of the test, and the test specimen forms all or part of the flame recirculation chamber. In the external configurations of the test, the flame recirculation chamber is only used to assist in the generation of the fireball and the use of the shielding chamber is not required.
