In addition, this International standard is in broad technical agreement with ISO recommendations and International standards on light fastness testing for textiles (and more specifically, the fastness of dyes to sunlight and artificial light) for which reference may be useful in connection with test equipment.
This International standard applies to all printing substrates and all printing processes such as paper, cardboard, metals (thin metal sheets and sheets) and plastic materials: letterpress, lithographic and gravure.
A test piece is exposed to sunlight at the same time as standard blue for evaluation of light fastness under certain conditions. Light fastness is evaluated on the blue wool standards scale by noting the grade of the standard that has undergone a similar change to the test print.
The lightfastness of prints is estimated by comparing them to a standard batch of eight blue dyes on wool fabric, with degrees of lightfastness in regular geometric steps. These dyeings are largely unaffected by changes in temperature and humidity and provide an acceptable scale for determining the lightfastness of any print, regardless of colour, type and density.
