This standard does not apply to tires intended for temporary use only. It includes a method for correlating measurement results to allow for interlaboratory comparisons. It is designed to facilitate international collaboration and possibly regulation creation.
Measurement of tires using this method allows comparisons to be made between the rolling resistance of new test tires when free-rolling straight forward, in a position perpendicular to the drum outer surface, and under steady-state conditions.
When measuring tire rolling resistance, it is necessary to measure small forces in the presence of much larger forces. Therefore, it is essential to use appropriately accurate equipment and instrumentation.
