ISO 3187 Refractory Products - Test for Determination of Compression Creep

The apparatus described is generally suitable for the determination of creep at compression up to 1 600 °C.

Refractory materials are defined as refractory materials. Refractory materials can be used for extended periods at temperatures above 538 °C (811 K; 1000 °F). It constitutes a large group of materials such as glass, kitchenware, especially fire bricks, which are the basic insulation materials of the industry. These are preferred where metallic materials are expensive or not used.

The structure of the material and especially the amount of pores affect the cold compressive strength of refractory materials. Refractory bricks show little deformation at room temperature. Cracks may occur due to different grain size and pore distribution and stresses between different phases in the structure at high temperature. Mechanical strength and wear resistance maintain their condition up to about 1000 °C. At higher temperatures, the wear resistance decreases with the increase of the glass phase.
