This International standard specifies methods for measuring sound pressure levels at a measuring surface surrounding a noise source (machine or equipment) in an anechoic or semi-anechoic room.
The sound power level produced by the noise source (or, in the case of pulsed or transient noise emission, sound energy level) is calculated using these measurements in frequency bands one-third octave wide or with frequency weighting A applied, based on the meteorological conditions at the time and place of the test and the reference characteristic acoustic impedance. corrections that allow any differences between the corresponding ones are included.
Generally, the frequency range of interest includes one-third octave bands with mid-band frequencies from 100 Hz to 10000 Hz. In practice, the range is extended or limited to frequencies beyond or within these limits for which the test chamber is qualified for measurement purposes.
The methods given in this International standard require that the source be installed either in an anechoic chamber or in a semi-anechoic chamber with certain acoustic properties. The methods are then based on the premise that the sound power or sound energy of the source is directly proportional to the square of the mean sound pressure over a hypothetical measuring surface surrounding the source and is otherwise dependent on the physical constants of the air.
The methods specified in this International standard allow the determination of sound power level and sound energy level in frequency bands or by applying frequency A-weighting.
