This international standard specifies the minimum requirements and test methods to be used for condoms made from natural rubber latex supplied to consumers for contraception and to help prevent sexually transmitted infections.
If a manufacturer claims that a particular brand of condom is stronger, or implies that a particular brand of condom provides extra protection or security in use because condoms are stronger than regular condoms, then additional requirements for "extra-resistant" condoms will apply this section.
Clinical data will attest to a statistically significant reduction in breakage rate for the extra-strong condom when compared in a random, double-blind trial with a reference, marketed condom from normal manufacture manufactured by the same manufacturer. The reference condom must comply with ISO 4074 requirements and exceed a single wall thickness of 0,060 mm in the middle body.
Condoms are non-sterile medical devices, but manufacturers are advised to take appropriate precautions to minimize microbiological contamination of the product during the manufacturing and packaging processes. Recommendations for manufacturers to periodically monitor microbial contamination during production are contained in this International Standard.
Condoms may be subject to specific local requirements required by national regulatory agencies in addition to those set out in this International Standard.
