ISO 4548-3 Lubricating Oil Filters for Internal Combustion Engines - Resistance Test to High Differential Pressure and High Temperature

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4548-3 testing. This part of IS0 4548 covers tests for measuring the resistance of filter elements to high differential pressure and resistance to high temperatures of full-flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines.

ISO 4548-3 Lubricating Oil Filters for Internal Combustion Engines - Resistance Test to High Differential Pressure and High Temperature

IS0 4548 specifies standard test procedures for measuring the performance of full-flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. It has been prepared in separate chapters, each dealing with a specific performance characteristic.

The tests together provide the necessary information to evaluate the properties of a filter, but tests can be performed separately if agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The crankcase shall be capable of holding a sufficient amount of oil and shall be equipped with a thermostatically controlled heater and cooler capable of maintaining the test temperature. The heater must be arranged in such a way as to prevent local overheating of the oil. By-pass return to the crankcase and the filter outlet pipe will end under the oil surface in the crankcase while the oil is circulating. The temperature must be adjusted so that the prescribed viscosity is maintained.

The standard covers two types of tests:

  • Withstand High Differential Pressure: This test measures the filter element's ability to withstand a high differential pressure without structural failure or loss of filtration efficiency. The filter is exposed to increasing pressure until it reaches a certain limit, and the pressure at which the filter element fails or the filtration efficiency drops below a certain level is recorded.
  • High Temperature Resistance: This test measures the ability of the filter element and other components of the filter to withstand high temperatures without structural deterioration or loss of filtration efficiency. The filter is placed in an oven and subjected to a certain temperature for a certain period of time, and the performance of the filter is evaluated before and after the test.

ISO 4548-3 provides detailed instructions on how to conduct these tests, including the specific equipment and conditions that should be used. By following these methods, manufacturers can ensure that their full-flow lube oil filters can withstand the extreme conditions that may be encountered during engine operation and continue to provide effective filtration to protect engine components.
