This International standard provides a test procedure for evaluating the filtration performance of a fine hydraulic power filter element, yielding repeatable test data.

In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a pressurized fluid in a closed circuit. The ideal filter for a hydraulic system offers unlimited restriction to the passage of particulate contaminants, has zero resistance to fluid flow, and provides unlimited capacity for retained contaminants.

A true filter cannot exhibit such outstanding performance characteristics. Therefore, test procedures should be in place to determine the degree of ideality (filter ability). The performance characteristics of a filter are a function of the element (configuration and material) and the housing (overall configuration and seal design).

In practice, a filter is subjected to a continuous stream of contaminants that mix with the hydraulic fluid until a certain terminal pressure drop (relief valve cracking pressure) is achieved.

Both the length of run time (before reaching terminal pressure drop) and the contaminant level at any point in the system are functions of the rate of contaminant addition (ie, pollutant entry and production rates) and the capacity of the filter. Therefore, a realistic laboratory test that determines filter capacity should provide a source of contaminants that continually enter the test filter and allow periodic monitoring of the filter's performance characteristics.
