For some applications it may be desirable to evaluate the behavior of materials in a hot humid atmosphere just below the Saturation limit of water vapor, such as in the presence of the liquid phase.
In these conditions, not only water absorption or leaching of some components of the composition, but also hydrolysis, leaching of plasticizers, etc. degradation events can also be observed.
Sometimes it is also desirable to evaluate the behavior of materials in the presence of a highly corrosive electrolyte, such as a sodium chloride solution (salt fog) present in marine environments, which is particularly important. It is well known that sodium chloride does not have a noticeable effect on Polymers, which are the basic components of plastic, and because of their higher osmotic pressure, salt solutions are normally absorbed by plastics to a lower degree than pure water, but it cannot. It should be assumed beforehand that it has no effect on composite materials containing, for example, fillers, reinforcement components or Pigments.
These tests are intended to provide data on the effects of disclosed exposures on materials; however, it cannot be said that there is a direct relationship between test results and behavior in the Service.
