The thermometers listed are of the short-range, mercury-in-glass scale type. They are used in bomb calorimetry and for other purposes where accurate measurement of temperature change is required. It is not equipped with auxiliary scales and is therefore not suitable for measuring absolute temperature. Requirements specify material, structure, scale, and accuracy.
Thermometers should preferably be calibrated for use in total immersion (i.e. the reading is taken when the thermometer is vertical and immersed at least to the end of the column of medium whose temperature is to be measured), but calibration for use must be made. Partial immersion is allowed at the request of the user. For partial immersion thermometers, a line should be engraved on at least half of the thermometer's sheath at the level it is intended to be immersed in, which should preferably be the combination of the "saddle" and the sheath.
The scale bearing strip shall be of a material suitable for the temperature to be measured and compatible with the method of fixing the strip. It will be firmly placed in the capillary tube inside the case and securely and securely attached to the top of the thermometer.
A suitable method of fixation is to fuse a glass tube or rod to the sheath and the upper end of the strip carrying the scale; the lower end of the strip shall be held freely in a suitable glass saddle. Alternatively, it will be fixed inside the sheath in any suitable way that allows differential expansion.
