ISO 6940 specifies a method for measuring the ease of ignition upon exposure of vertically oriented textile fabrics and industrial products in the form of single or multi-component fabrics (coated, quilted, multilayer, sandwich structures and similar combinations). This method evaluates the properties of textile fabrics in response to flame contact under controlled conditions.
The effect of stitches on the behavior of fabrics can be determined by this test method. For this, the seam is positioned in the test specimen so that it is exposed to the test flame. Where applicable, trims are tested under this standard as part of the fabric assembly in which they are or will be used.

The testing methods defined in ISO 6940 and 6941 standards are widely applied throughout the industry, particularly in the textile and apparel manufacturing sectors where they are widely used for testing fabrics and other woven material products. These tests are to determine the flame spread rate for vertically oriented samples.
For each exposure condition, at least six samples of the product are tested. Three specimens are cut longitudinally and three specimens transversely. These tests cover products processed into single-component or multi-component materials (such as coated, quilted and multi-layered). If the surface areas of a product are markedly different, more than one test must be performed to evaluate the product. Therefore, the exact number of samples is determined only after the first inspection.
