This part of the ISO 9073-2 standard specifies methods for determining the thickness of regular and bulk nonwoven textiles under a given condition.
The principle of this test method is to measure the thickness of the nonwoven fabric as the distance between the reference plate on which the nonwoven fabric is located and a parallel presser foot that applies a certain pressure to the area under test.
It allows the thickness of a non-woven fabric to be measured as the distance between a reference plate on which the non-woven fabric is placed and a parallel presser foot that exerts a certain pressure on the surface under test.
The top plate or presser foot must be able to move vertically and have a space of approximately '2500 mm'. The reference plate must have a flat surface with a diameter of at least 50 mm larger than that of the presser foot.
The ISO 9073-2 standard describes methods for determining the thickness of normal and bulky non-woven textiles under a certain pressure. It is accepted that non-woven fabrics have technologically common features not only with textile products, but also with paper or plastic products.
Meanwhile, there is another textile testing method for determining the thickness (ISO 5084). However, to meet the specific needs of nonwovens, this part of the ISO 9073 standard specifies the following alternative requirements to those listed in the ISO 5084 standard:
