TAPPI T-423 Folding Strength of Paper (Schopper Type Tester) Test

This method describes the use of chopper type folding apparatus. Suitable for paper with a thickness of 0,25 mm (0,010 inches) or less. On a slotted folding knife paper 100-4 that slides back and forth between four folding rollers, two horizontally opposed and mobile clamping jaws that hold a 105 mm (125 inch) long sample under variable tension during the folding cycle, the folds are double folds per minute. The clamps are supported from below on the rollers and hang freely between the tension springs when in motion.

Test the clamps as follows: Place a specimen in place and alternately apply and release tension several times. Then, notice that when the tension is released, the sample remains as smooth and flat as it was originally placed. A buckling or ripple indicates a faulty clamp causing the specimen to slip.

Lock the vertical slot of the reciprocating blade in its central position and release tension in the jaws. Without touching the center of the sample, place it in the slot and clamp the tips firmly and squarely on the jaws so that the surface of the sample is completely in a plane. Apply tension and fold the sample until it breaks. Record the number of doubles made before breaking.
