This Technical specification specifies a method for evaluating surface resistance to micro-scratching and relates to rigid surfaces of all finished products, whatever their material.
Method A is suitable for all types of surface finishes and finishes except pearlescent or metallic effect finishes. Method B is suitable for all types of surfaces.
It does not apply to varnishes on leather and fabrics. The test is designed to be performed on a piece of finished furniture, but can be performed on test panels made of the same material, finished in the same way as the finished product, and of sufficient size to meet the requirements of the test.
The test surface will be fixed on a horizontal table. A circular scrubbing material fixed in a holder strikes the test surface with a defined load. Table and holder should be moved perpendicular to each other by translational motion, with defined frequencies, drawing a Lissajous shape. The holder can also rotate freely around its axis perpendicular to the horizontal plane.
The test surface is exposed to the scrubbing material for a predetermined number of scrubs. Surface changes are determined by gloss measurement or visual evaluation.
The test device must be assembled according to the apparatus manufacturer's instructions. For the test described, outer position C for both axes should be used to create the larger Lissajous shape as described in EN ISO 12947-1 or the manufacturing manual.
