Product Safety Tests

Flammability Tests

Commonly used primarily in the textile industry, flammability tests are performed to help determine how products will react when exposed to flame and fire.

Flammability Tests

Today, advanced laboratories are generally based on the standards published by the following international organizations and accepted all over the world:

  • International Standards Organization (ISO)
  • American Testing and Materials Association (ASTM)
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

These test methods mainly cover products such as mattresses, furniture, upholstered furniture, wall coverings, plastics and components, apparel, personal care and beauty products, toys and children's products.

Knowing how a product will perform when exposed to flame and fire is not only a responsible safety practice, it is also a critical component in building consumer confidence.

Flammability testing is a critical part of producing reliable consumer products. Before products are offered to consumers, they must meet safety requirements, including burning rate, heat and smoke emission criteria.

For example, flammability tests of mattresses and furniture are carried out in a special environment that contributes to the measurement of heat release, smoke emission and opacity, flammable gas release and total mass loss. During these tests, products are exposed to a lit cigarette or a large open flame to determine how this product reacts in the event of an accidental and intentional fire.

With vertical and horizontal flammability tests, it is determined how easily the products ignite, how quickly they burn and how they react when burned. During vertical flammability tests, the length of time a product burns after the igniting flame is removed, how long the sample burns, and whether it drips flaming particles is observed. During horizontal flammability tests, it is observed whether the product continues to burn after the flame is removed, and then the burning rate is calculated.

In order to minimize the risk of fire, it is necessary to know the basic properties such as lower flammability limit, upper flammability limit, limiting oxygen concentration and flammability index. Tests in this direction are important in terms of evaluating the flammability properties of a material. The lower flammability limit is the lowest concentration at which flammable vapor or a mixture of gas and air is flammable. The upper flammability limit is the highest concentration at which flammable vapor or a mixture of gas and air is flammable. The limiting oxygen concentration is the minimum concentration of oxygen required for a flammable condition to occur when mixed with a flammable vapor or gas of any concentration. The flash index is the volume-normalized maximum pressure rise rate for a combustible mixture. Various flammability tests are performed to determine these properties and it is essential to understand these conditions to ensure proper safety practices.

A good flammability test takes into account the oxidizing medium, temperature, pressure, ignition energy, container size and geometry, gas composition, and many other variables that affect the flammability of a particular chemical.

Different materials require different flammability tests. Because a single product is made from many different materials, the entire product is usually flammability tested to determine whether the product meets expectations when exposed to fire. Most tests typically require the sample material to be exposed to an open flame for a certain period of time. This process provides combustion characteristics, including: whether the sample material burns, how much of it burns, how long it burns after the flame is removed, how long the material glows from the heat after the flame is removed, whether the sample has dripped any burning material, and whether the material has dripped of any burning material. whether it shows unusual phenomenon.

Our organization also provides flammability testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
