EN 16165 is a European standard that specifies methods for evaluating the slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces such as flooring, stair treads and walkways. The standard outlines three different methods for assessing slip resistance:
Pendulum test method: This method measures the frictional resistance of a surface by swinging a pendulum over it and measuring the distance the pendulum travels after hitting the surface. The results are expressed as the pendulum test value (PTV), which indicates the slip resistance of the surface.
Ramp test method: This method measures a ramp angle at which a person can safely walk without slipping. The results are expressed as a coefficient of friction (CoF), which indicates the slip resistance of the surface.
Friction tester test method: This method measures the frictional resistance of a surface by sliding a test block over it and measuring the force required to initiate and maintain the slide. The results are expressed as a coefficient of friction (CoF), which indicates the slip resistance of the surface.
The standard also specifies test conditions such as the type of footwear to be used and the amount of water or other contaminants to be applied to the surface during the test. It also provides guidance on interpreting test results and determining whether a surface meets slip resistance requirements.
