This standard establishes a classification system for GPACDs that provide single pass outdoor air to general ventilation systems using outdoor air contaminated by local urban sources or long-distance pollution.
The classification system aims to assist in the assessment of molecular contamination in addition to the particulate contamination covered by ISO 16890-1.
This standard specifies four reference pollutants used for classification, namely ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and toluene, as they are relevant to the intended application. This standard also specifies three duty levels assigned to each contaminant, reflecting the typical performance range of devices for the application.
All other applications are excluded as the selection of reference contaminants and duty levels is specific and unique to the intended application. In particular, this standard does not apply to GPACDs in recirculation applications or pollution from indoor sources as well as pharmaceutical, microelectronic, nuclear, homeland security and military applications.
EN ISO 10121-1 and EN ISO 10121-2 aim to provide laboratory test methods for GPACM and GPACD, respectively. From the tests and reports produced, a molecular filtration expert can evaluate the performance of different products as well as compare performance using benchmark tests for specific applications. To make these assessments, basic knowledge of chemistry, molecular filtration and practice at hand are required.
