ISO 5636-1 Paper and Board - Determination of Air Permeability (Mid Range) - Part 1: General Method

This standard specifies the basic requirements for apparatus and general operating procedures for determining the air permeability of paper and paperboard in the medium air permeability range and applies to paper and paperboard with air permeability between 1x10- and 1x10 m/(Pa.s). Not suitable for rough-surfaced papers such as crepe and corrugated papers that cannot be clamped securely to prevent leakage.

This International standard specifies methods for measuring the rate of air flow through a unit area of ​​a sheet of paper or cardboard under a unit pressure difference. Measurements can be made with any apparatus that conforms to the specifications given in this International Standard.

This section of IS0 5636 specifies basic requirements for apparatus and general operating procedures. Other sections specify detailed requirements and operating procedures that apply to certain types of apparatus.

When water is used as the displacing medium, the air flow through the test piece should be in a direction that was not previously in contact with the water. Air leakage should be checked by squeezing a rigid impermeable material, such as a metal foil, into the apparatus rather than the test piece. Any leakage will be less than 0,025 times the minimum air permeability that can be measured with a given instrument.
