UL 9 UL Standard for Safety Fire Testing of Window Groups

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of UL 9 standard. Assemblies classified according to this standard provide only limited protection against heat conduction. This standard provides guidance for measuring heat flux emitted from the test specimen and temperatures at the unexposed surface during fire exposure.

Tests carried out in accordance with these test methods shall not be interpreted as determining the suitability of window fittings for continued use after exposure to fire.

These methods are intended to evaluate the ability of a window or other light transmitting device to remain in an opening during a predetermined test exposure.

The tests expose a sample to a standard fire controlled to reach certain temperatures for a specified period of time followed by the application of a specified standard fire hose flow. However, exposure may not represent all fire exposure conditions, which may change with changes in the amount, nature and distribution of the fire load; ventilation; compartment size and configuration; and the heat sink properties of the compartment. However, it provides a relative measure of the fire performance of window assemblies under these specified exposure conditions.

This standard defines two pressure conditions for furnace control during fire exposure. One pressure condition is defined as a positive pressure condition and the other is defined as a neutral pressure condition.

Any change from the tested structure or conditions can significantly alter the performance characteristics of the assembly.

These methods do not provide:

  • Full information on the performance of all window assemblies in walls made of materials other than those tested;
  • assessing the extent to which the window assembly contributes to the fire hazard by producing smoke, toxic gases or other combustion products;
  • Measuring the degree of control or restriction of the passage of smoke or combustion products through the window assembly.

These methods allow glass lights and openings to be lost, provided such losses and openings do not exceed specified limits.
