UNI 9177 Reaction to Fire - Flammable Product Classification

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of UNI 9177 standard. The UNI 9177 standard contains the classification framework for flammable materials based on the UNI 8457 e UNI 9174 test methods. Definitive classification is made based on the basic artificial method and evidence.

UNI 9177 Reaction to Fire - Flammable Product Classification

Flame spread is measured along the edges of a vertical or horizontal surface of a sample exposed to a flame and a radiant panel. After flashing, the damaged area and dripping are also observed.

The radiant panel and pilot flame are ignited. The burner and the vertically oriented sample are then positioned. The time to reach the different marker yarns is recorded. The average velocity is calculated to arrive at the flame propagation velocity. Dripping and burning rashes are seen with the damaged area. Based on observations of flame spread, damaged area, and dripping and burning debris, the material can be classified by levels.

Levels are multiplied by a factor. Flame propagation speed x2, Damaged area x2, Time after flash x1, Drip x1, for wall and x2 for ceiling. The sum of the levels of behavior multiplied by the correction factors gives the product category (I to IV).

Combustible materials and products such as plastic are tested according to the “UNI 9177: Reaction to fire – Combustible products classification and are divided into 1 categories, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 5, with 1 representing the best performance level and 5 the worst performance.

The Ministerial Decree of 26 June 1984 and the 2001 amendment regulates the classification of fire response performance and the approval of fire prevention materials in Italy.

National fire reaction performance classifications for combustible materials are determined using results from a combination of the three tests shown below:

  • UNI 9174, Fire reaction of products exposed to flame in the presence of radiant heat
  • UNI 8456, Combustible products on both sides with fire - Small flame test
  • UNI 8457, Combustible products that can strike a single surface with flame - Small flame test
