(EU) 2020/1245 Tests for Plastics Intended to Contact with Food

The legal regulation (EU) 2020/1245 published in the European Union countries amends the regulation (EU) 10/2011 on plastic materials and substances intended to come into contact with food.

(EU) 2020/1245 Tests for Plastics Intended to Contact with Food

According to this regulation, a transition period is foreseen for plastic materials and articles that comply with the regulation (EU) 2020/1245, which was valid before the regulation (EU) 10/2011 came into force.

For the purposes of this legal regulation, some of the food contact materials are already in contact with food. These are materials that are reasonably expected to come into contact with food or transfer its components to food under normal or foreseeable conditions of use. Since chemicals can migrate from materials to food, the safety of food contact materials must be evaluated. These materials are very diverse. For example, it can be plastic, ceramics, glass, silicone, paper and cardboard, textiles, rubber, metal and alloy, coating, enamel, wood and bamboo and others. These materials must be produced in accordance with good manufacturing practices so as not to transfer their components to the food beyond the prescribed limits. Namely,

  • It should not endanger human health. There should be no toxic chemical substance transfer to foodstuffs. For example, primary aromatic amine, heavy metals, monomer or other starting materials and the like should not pass into food.
  • It should not cause an unacceptable change in the composition of the food. For example, color release, rust formation and the like should not occur on foodstuffs.
  • It should not cause a deterioration in organoleptic properties. For example, the materials should not have an unpleasant odor, change in taste and the like.

The scope of the legal regulations (EU 10/2011 and (EU) 2020/1245 is determined as follows:

  • Materials and articles consisting exclusively of plastics and parts thereof
  • Plastic multilayer materials and objects held together by adhesives or other means
  • Materials and articles referred to herein, printed or covered with a coating
  • Plastic layers or plastic coatings that form seals on the lids
  • Multi-material multi-layer material and plastic layers in articles

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides plastic material testing services that are intended to come into contact with food (EU) 2020/1245, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
