EN 673 Glass in Building - Test for Determination of Thermal Transmittance

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 673 testing. This standard specifies a calculation method for determining the thermal transmittance of glasses with flat and parallel surfaces.

EN 673 Glass in Building - Test for Determination of Thermal Transmittance

This European Standard applies to non-transparent materials in the far infrared, applicable to uncoated glass (including glass with structured surfaces, e.g. patterned glass), coated glass and soda-lime glass products, borosilicate glass and glass ceramics.

It also applies to multiple glasses containing such glasses and/or materials. Not applicable to multi-glasses containing gas field sheets or foils that are far infrared transparent. The procedure specified in this European Standard determines the U-value ) (thermal transmittance) in the central area of the glass.

Edge effects from the spacer of a sealed glass unit or thermal bridge through the window frame are not included. Also, energy transfer from solar radiation is not taken into account. The influences of Georgian and other bars are beyond the scope of this European Standard.

The Standard for the calculation of the total U-value of windows, doors and shutters (see A.1) gives a normative reference to the calculated U-value for glass components according to this standard.

The vertical position of the glass is indicated for product comparison purposes.

Additionally, U-values are calculated using the same procedure for other purposes, in particular to estimate:

  • heat loss through glass;
  • Conduction heat gains in summer;
  • Condensation on glass surfaces;
  • Effect of absorbed solar radiation on determination of solar factor .

For the application of the glass U-values set by this standard, reference should be made to [3], [4] and [5] or other European Standards on heat loss calculations.

The rules are simplified as much as possible, consistent with accuracy.
