EN ISO 18219-1 Leather - Test for Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins

Polycarbonate alkanes (CxH(2x-y+2)Cly) in the case of SCCP alkanes containing C10-13. They are manufactured by chlorination of n-alkanes or paraffin wax and contain 30 to 70% chlorine. Products are generally divided into three groups depending on the chain length: short chain (C10 – C13), medium (C14 – C17) and long (C18 – C30) chain lengths.

The major application of CPs is as a plasticizer using only MCCPs, which is commonly used in conjunction with primary plasticizers such as certain phthalates in flexible PVCs. Chlorinated paraffins also confer a number of technical advantages, the most important of which is the improvement of flame retardant properties and high pressure lubrication.

CPs can be released into the environment from improperly disposed of metalworking fluids or polymers containing chlorinated paraffin. Loss of chlorinated paraffin through leaching from paints and coatings can also contribute to environmental pollution. Short-chain CPs with less than 50% chlorine content appear to degrade under aerobic conditions. CPs are bioaccumulative and uptake and elimination are faster for substances with low chlorine content.
