LRIT Compatibility Test

The Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system is a system that enables global identification and tracking of ships using existing GMDSS equipment (INMARSAT-C) on board.

LRIT Compatibility Test

A ship's LRIT equipment must transmit position reports at 6-hour intervals, unless requested by an LRIT data center at more frequent intervals.

The obligations of ships to transmit LRIT information, the right and obligations of SOLAS Contracting States to receive LRIT information of Search and rescue services are determined in the VAS regulation of the SOLAS Convention.

The LRIT system includes ship sourced LRIT information transmission equipment, Communication Service Providers, Application Service Providers, LRIT Data Centers and the relevant Ship Tracking System and LRIT Data Distribution. Certain aspects of LRIT system performance are reviewed or supervised by the LRIT Coordinator acting on behalf of all SOLAS Contracting Governments.

LRIT information is provided to Contracting States through a National, Regional and Cooperative LRIT Data Centers system using the International LRIT Data Exchange through the 1974 SOLAS Convention and search and rescue services that have the right to request information.

Each Administration should provide a list of vessels eligible to fly their LRIT information to their chosen LRIT Data Center along with other outstanding details and update these lists without delay. Ships should transmit LRIT information only to the LRIT Data Center selected by their management.

Why is the report required?

These reports are required in accordance with SOLAS section V Regulation 19.

Which ships should have LRIT Certificate of Conformity?

For ships participating in international voyages with the following features LRIT Compatibility Test is necessary:

  • Passenger ships
  • Cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and over
  • Mobile marine drilling units

How often should a LRIT Compatibility Test be performed on a ship?

LRIT compatibility test certificate does not have an expiration date as long as the equipment remains the same. A retest may be required if:

  • Ship replaces or upgrades LRIT equipment
  • Ship replaces flags

Note: ships should automatically transmit the following long-range identification and tracking information:

  • ID of the ship
  • Ship's location
  • Date and time of the given location.

  • Type approved by the administration and meeting the required performance standards
