Nano Indentation Tests

Nano indentation is a method developed in the mid-1970s to measure the elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness of solid materials. It is widely used today to determine thin film and surface mechanical properties. Especially in biology and biomaterials, surface and interface properties are of great importance and nano-indentation method is preferred to examine biological materials and systems.

Nano Indentation Tests

The applied methods mostly focused on hard tissues and biomaterials, but soft tissues and viscoelastic biomaterials are receiving increasing attention. In this respect, nano indentation testing will be more important in biology and biomaterials research in the coming years.

The technique of nano indentation has many advantages. This technique is applied to determine not only the elastic modulus and hardness values, but also other mechanical properties such as nano-level fracture toughness, creep and yield stress. This technique does not require a powerful microscope to measure indentation depth and is ideal for testing nanoscale thin films and materials. This technique is particularly useful when testing on materials coated with films or on heterogeneous materials.

The nano-indentation technique is an extremely powerful method for investigating the mechanical properties of the microstructure of various materials. It is a proven technique to characterize the mechanical properties of materials at the nano and micro scale.

The following international standards are followed in nano indentation tests:

  • ISO 14577-1 Metallic materials - Instrument indentation testing for hardness and material parameters - Part 1: Test method. This standard describes an instrumented indentation test method for determining hardness and other material parameters for macro, micro and nano ranges.
  • ASTM E2546-07 Standard practice for instrumented indentation testing. This standard describes the requirements needed to generate data used to determine indentation hardness and other material properties.

Instruments used in nano indentation tests provide excellent performance and stability over a wide load range. These instruments use electromagnetic force application and capacitive depth measurement to measure the elastic and plastic properties of materials at the nanoscale and perform: indentation testing, stiffness and modulus mapping, depth profiling, creep properties, and two load heads.

Our organization also provides nano indentation testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
