SAE J2192 Tests for Physical Protection of Cable Assemblies

EUROLAB Laboratory performs SAE J2192 tests in its laboratory, describing recommended methods for testing flexible harness coatings for use in ground vehicle electrical distribution systems. This recommended test practice will apply to all tapes, extruded tubing and textile tubing.

SAE J2192 Tests for Physical Protection of Cable Assemblies

This method shall be applied for coatings used in wiring assemblies. The Customer's Engineering Group must certify the material based on functional application performance requirements to ensure proper validation of the coating materials. Note that when samples are prepared according to this SAE Recommended Practice, samples covered with spirally wound tape will have two layers of tape, while samples coated with tape or other longitudinally applied coatings will have only one layer. This can skew any comparisons between skins, but more accurately reflects the typical usage of skins, meaning the comparisons are still valid. For tests in which adhesive tapes are tested in only one layer (abrasion, noise suppression), additional double-layer tests should be considered if tapes are compared to tubes.

Reference standards given in these tests

ASTM D3032 - Standard Test Methods for Junction Wire Insulation
For the purposes of these test methods, jumper insulation includes all components of the insulation system used in single insulated conductors or in an assembly of wire harness and single insulated conductors, such as a harness or flat ribbon cable. Insulating materials include not only the primary insulation on the conductor, but also the insulating jackets on the shielded structures.

ASTM D4157 - Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Oscillating Roller Method)
This test method covers the determination of the abrasion resistance of woven textile fabrics using an oscillating roller tester. This test method may not be available for some fabric structures.
Other procedures for measuring the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics: Guidelines are provided in ASTM D3884 and ASTM D4158 and Test Methods ASTM D3885, ASTM D3886, and AATCC 93.

ASTM D5423 - Standard Specification for Laboratory Furnaces with Forced Convection for Evaluation of Electrical Insulation
This specification covers forced convection ventilated electrically heated ovens used for thermal endurance assessment of electrical insulating materials operating in all or part of the temperature range from 20°C above ambient to 500°C.
The specification requirements for Type I furnaces are based on and technically the same as IEC Publication 216-4-1. The requirements for Type II furnaces are essentially the same as those of Specification D2436. This specification and an associated test method, D5374, superseded Specification D2436.
