Direct Impact Test

Lightning Tests

Direct Impact Test

It includes physical damage caused by the installation of a very hot (35-50.000 ° F) and high current (200.000+ amperes) lightning channel, which has direct effects of lightning. Direct effects, burning and breaking of materials, and direct transmission of lightning voltages to electrical and electronic circuits cause equipment to burn.

Direct Impact Test

High-voltage, Marx-type lightning impulse generators generate voltages and electric fields up to 2.4 million volts to simulate fluctuations in power transmission lines. The high current generator produces up to 200.000 amps and includes three units adapted to reproduce lightning strikes and medium and continuous current waveforms of a typical lightning strike. In order to accommodate very large test samples, direct impact tests are carried out in facilities such as Lightning Technologies' 40 x 120 feet closed high chamber laboratory.

Aircraft certification and flight safety officials worldwide require the protection of aircraft structures and systems, which are critical or important for an aircraft's safe flight, from significant damage caused by lightning. These requirements are met by a certification plan that details lightning protection engineering and - through verification testing - demonstrates that engineering meets all applicable standards and regulations. The U.S. Federal Aviation Regulation FAR 25.581 states that every aircraft must be protected against the disastrous effects of lightning.

EUROLAB provides lightning protection engineering, certification plan preparation and verification testing services to aircraft and aerospace systems manufacturers worldwide. Our engineers, leading in large commercial and military design programs, adopt a system-wide approach to ensure that lightning protection is compatible with field and weight limitations, electromagnetic compatibility, and electromagnetic pulse. Our experience includes traditional designs, all composite and cable flight aircraft, as well as avionic upgrades and engine modifications.

Direct effects lightning tests may include the following standards; RTCA DO-160 in Chapter 23 as well as EUROCAE ED-105, SAE ARP5412, 5414, 5415, 5416, 5577, IEC 61400-24 Annex D.2, MIL-STD-464 Chapter 5.5, LC1024 / 1027, ANSO LC- 1 and 14 CFR 25.981.
