Indirect Impact Test

The indirect effects of lightning are primarily caused by the ground voltage rises and the intense electromagnetic field associated with lightning. These areas and ground voltage spikes have enough energy to cause component damage of one kilometer or more from the actual impact. Indirect effects most often result in system interconnection cables and can damage or disrupt electronic components.

EUROLAB offers many test methods for indirect effects. These methods are defined in IEEE, ANSI, SAE, RTCA, EUROCAE, US MIL-STDs and in many industry and company standards and specifications. The indirect effects testing laboratory includes a full range of special devices for temporary analysis, from the individual circuit level to fully functional interconnected systems.

We can apply a variety of test methods, including pin injection, transformer injection, capacitive injection, ground circuit injection and field immersion techniques, to determine the potential impact of these factors on your device. Cumulatively, these tests allow our engineers to perform a complete field and temporary analysis by evaluating their indirect effects on everything from single circuit components to interconnected electronic systems.

The RTCA DO-160 requirements outline environmental conditions and testing procedures for airborne electronic equipment (avionics) for the entire range of aircraft, from light general aviation aircraft and helicopters to jumbo jets and supersonic transport classes of aircraft.

EUROLAB can simulate the indirect beat (current and voltage) specified in DO-160, Chapter 22. In addition to DO-160, EUROLAB generators can also meet Aircraft Body Special Lightning Requirements (Boeing and Airbus). These test standards require the use of special single-strike, multi-strike and multiple blast-pulse strings for the induced lightning test of avionics.
