IEC 62561-4 Lightning Protection System Components (LPSC) - Part 4: Requirements for Conductive Fasteners

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of IEC 62561-4 standard. This part of the IEC 62561 standard deals with requirements and tests for metallic and non-metallic conductive fasteners used to hold and support air-termination, down-conductor and earth-termination systems.

IEC 62561-4 Lightning Protection System Components (LPSC) - Part 4: Requirements for Conductive Fasteners

Due to the large number and types used in today's constructions, this document does not cover the fixing of conductive fasteners to the fabric of the structures. LPSC may also be suitable for use in hazardous environments. Therefore, there are additional requirements when installing components in such conditions.

This part of IEC 62561 deals with the requirements and tests for the conductor connectors used for the installation of a lightning protection system (LPS) designed and implemented according to lightning protection system components (LPSC), in particular IEC 62305 (all parts).

The conductor fastener must perform the function of acceptably and securely clamping the conductor when subjected to mechanical influences, lightning discharge voltage and environmental influences. Conductive fasteners shall be suitable for the experiments. The material of the conductor fastener will be compatible with the conductor it is attached to and the surface material on which it is mounted.

Some extreme environmental conditions make the selection of non-metallic conductive fasteners inappropriate. Specific recommendations are given by the manufacturers regarding their suitability for changing environments. Conductor fasteners are designed and constructed in such a way as to ensure safe use, hold and support for the conductor, and in normal use, their performance is reliable and does not pose a hazard to persons and the environment.

The tests specified in this document are type tests. Once these tests have been made, they should not be repeated unless changes are made to the material, design or type of manufacturing process that could alter the performance characteristics of the product.

This document cannot cover all possible conductive fasteners and the way they are fixed to various surfaces of different materials. Where necessary, the specific test regimen for these applications should be agreed between the test engineer and the manufacturer.

Unless otherwise specified, tests are performed with specimens assembled and assembled in normal use, with recommended conductor materials, dimensions and tightening torques as specified in the manufacturer's or supplier's instructions. The tests should be done in the order given after the environmental tests of the sample. Unless otherwise stated, 12 metallic or 18 composite/non-metallic specimens are tested and requirements are met if all tests are met.

If only one sample fails a test due to a manufacturing defect, that test and any previous tests that may have affected the results of the test should be repeated. Subsequent tests should be performed in the same required order on another complete set of samples, all complying with the requirements. Tests for non-metallic conductive fasteners shall begin no earlier than 168 hours from the date of manufacture.

A torque meter will be used for all tightening operations. It shall have a resolution of at least 4 Nm with an accuracy of ± 0,5% or less. The applicable tolerance for any applied mechanical load must be within ±5%.

When submitting the first set of samples, the applicant may also submit an additional set of samples, which may be required if a sample fails. The testing lab will then test the additional set of samples without further request and reject it only if another failure occurs. Failure of a sample entails rejection if the additional sample set is not submitted at the same time.
