Lightning Tests

IEC/EN 62561 Lightning Protection System Components (LPSC) Test Standards

IEC/EN 62561 specifies requirements and tests for metallic connecting components that form part of a lightning protection system (LPS). Typically these can be connectors, clamps, clamping and bridging components, expansion pieces, and test connections.

IEC/EN 62561 Lightning Protection System Components (LPSC) Test Standards

For the purposes of this document, exothermic, soldering, welding, clamping, crimping, sewing, screwing or bolting connection types are considered connection components. Testing of components for explosive atmosphere is not covered by this document.

IEC/EN 62561 Test Sections

The IEC/EN 62561 test standard generally examines and tests lightning protection system components in 6 separate sections.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 1: Requirements for Connecting Components

Specifies the requirements and tests for metallic connecting components that form part of a lightning protection system (LPS). Typically these can be connectors, clamps, clamping and bridging components, expansion pieces, and test connections. For the purposes of this document, the following types of connections are considered connection components: exothermic, soldering, welding, clamping, crimping, sewing, screwing or bolting. Testing of components for explosive atmosphere is not covered by this document.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 2: Requirements for Conductors and Earth Electrodes

Metallic conductors (other than natural conductors) forming part of air-termination and down-conductor systems, metallic earth electrodes forming part of ground-termination specify requirements and tests for the system.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 3: Requirements for Insulating Spark Gap (ISG)

Specifies requirements and tests for insulating spark gaps (ISG) for lightning protection systems. ISGs can be used to indirectly connect a lightning protection system to other nearby metalwork where a direct connection is not permitted for functional reasons.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 4: Requirements for Conductive Fasteners

It relates to requirements and tests for metallic and non-metallic conductive fasteners used to hold and support air-termination, down-conductor and earth-termination systems. Due to the large number and types used in today's constructions, this document does not cover the fixing of conductive fasteners to the fabric of the structures. LPSC may also be suitable for use in hazardous environments. Therefore, there are additional requirements when installing components in such conditions.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 5: Requirements for Ground Electrode Control Housings and Ground Electrode Seals

Specifies requirements and tests for ground-mounted ground electrode control sockets (ground socket) and ground electrode seals. Lightning protection system components (LPSC) may also be suitable for use in hazardous environments. Therefore, there are additional requirements when installing components under these conditions.

IEC/EN 62561 - Part 6: Requirements for Lightning Strike Counters (LSC)

Specifies requirements and tests for devices intended to count the number of lightning strikes based on the current flowing in a conductor. This conductor may be part of a lightning protection system (LPS) or may be connected to an SPD installation or other conductor that is not intended to transmit a significant portion of lightning currents. LSCs may also be suitable for use in hazardous environments and therefore there are extra requirements required for components to be installed in such conditions.
